Many football fans believed that if Lionel Messi was to lead Argentina to World Cup glory this summer, there could be no argument that he is the greatest player of all time. However, the chances of that happening now look incredibly slim. Messi’s missed penalty resulted in Argentina drawing their opening match against Iceland before they were thrashed 3-0 by Croatia in their second game. During their damaging loss, Messi was anonymous and barely touched the ball. His frustrations and stress could be seen throughout the 90 minutes as he saw his dream slipping away slowly. You couldn’t help but feel sorry for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. And even Croatian players appeared to feel a bit sorry after the match. Real Madrid midfielder - and Man of the Match on the night - Luka Modric has a few words for his rival. “Messi is an incredible player,” Modric said. “But he can’t do everything alone. In football you need help and it can’t be done alone.” He’s spot on. Despite Messi’...
A court in California has heard the 911 call made by a 17-year-old to tell police about the years of abuse she and her 12 siblings allegedly suffered at the hands of their parents. In the call the girl tells the dispatcher to "help my sisters" as she gives details of their squalid house with a suffocating stench, where they were shackled to beds and choked by their parents. The children's parents David and Louise Turpin have pleaded not guilty to torture, child abuse and other charges. Louise Turpin dabbed her eyes with a tissue as the recording was played during a preliminary hearing to decide if the couple should face trial. The girl is heard saying two younger sisters and a brother were chained to their beds and that she could not take it any longer. Louise Turpin dabbed her eyes in court as the 911 call was played "They will wake up at night and they will start crying and they wanted me to call somebody," she said in a high-pitched voice. "I wante...
FG starving Ekiti of Paris Club refund to play politics, Ekiti govt cries out FG starving Ekiti of Paris Club refund to play politics, Ekiti govt cries out THE Ekiti State government has cried out over lack of funds and accused the Federal Government of deliberately withholding the release of the Paris Club refund to states purposely to prevent Ekiti from using the money to pay arrears of workers’ salary before the July 14 governorship election. The state governor, Ayodele Fayose, who stated this on Thursday in a statement, also warned that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against “collation of elections results midway in the election as it was done during the governorship election in Edo State.” Governor Fayose, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi, explained that Ekiti and other states had “been cleared to get the Paris Club refund, but the FG refused to release it to the states because of Ekiti election as it did in Kogi.” The gover...

David Beckham has thrown his weight behind North America's bid to host the 2026 World Cup as the vote looms, saying the fans' passion for football would make the event "very special". The US-Canada-Mexico joint bid is battling against Morocco for the right to stage the tournament, with Fifa members picking the winner at a vote in Moscow on June 13. "A football competition as big as the World Cup deserves to be in great places and if the US, Canada and Mexico get that it will be very special," said former LA Galaxy star Beckham in a video released by Major League Soccer. The former England captain, who played for the Galaxy for six seasons and was awarded an MLS franchise in Miami earlier this year, said he had experienced the passion for the game in all three countries. "I've been able to have played in one of these countries and I've been to the other two as well and also played in Canada for the Galaxy but I know the passion that runs thro...
The Supreme Court will today (Monday) hear the appeals by the Peoples Democratic Party and its governorship candidate in the September 2018 governorship election in Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, challenging the victory of the Governor of the state, Adegboyega Oyetola and his All Progressives Congress at the poll. Adeleke’s lead counsel, Dr Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), who said his team had received the hearing notice in respect of today’s proceedings, confirmed this to our correspondent on Sunday. The appellants are by their appeal challenging the May 9, 2019 majority judgment of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal which affirmed Oyetola’s victory at the September 2018 poll. By a split decision of two to one, the three-man tribunal had in its verdict delivered on March 22, 2019 nullified the election of Oyetola and his party and declared Adeleke and his Peoples Democratic Party, as the true winner. But on May 9, 2019, the Court of Appeal, in a four to one split decision of ...
